Amplifying Community Voice at the Health Matters Gubernatorial Forum

At Sierra Health Foundation, we believe health is about much more than health care. True health looks like abundant economic opportunity, safe and affordable housing, clean air and water, and strong community relationships. Yet for too many Californians, these essentials remain out of reach. That’s why we’re proud to co-sponsor the Health Matters Gubernatorial Forum on November 7 in the Inland Empire—a first-of-its-kind, nonpartisan event where four leading candidates for California’s next governor will engage directly with community voices about what matters most for their health and well-being.

“California’s future depends on bold action and intentional partnerships,” said Chet P. Hewitt, president and CEO of Sierra Health Foundation. “Our next governor must work hand-in-hand with communities to uplift every Californian’s health and well-being.”

The health challenges before us are urgent and complex. Nearly half of California’s children rely on Medi-Cal, along with one in five workers. By 2033, 89% of Californians age 75 and older will lack the resources to pay privately for care. And persistent disparities continue to impact immigrant families, rural communities and people of color. These inequities remind us that health policy cannot be separated from issues like housing, immigration, education and environmental justice.

Other states increasingly look to California for leadership on pressing policy challenges, and the state’s next governor must be aligned with the values of its diverse communities to ensure continued progress. The Health Matters Forum reflects the heart of our approach: lasting change begins with community leadership. When policy decisions are informed by those most affected, solutions are more equitable, sustainable and effective. This event is designed to ensure that community priorities are not an afterthought, but the foundation for California’s future.

As one of 11 philanthropic partners supporting this forum, we stand committed to advancing equity, amplifying community voices and ensuring that the next chapter of California’s story is one where every resident has the chance to live a healthful life.
