Capacity Building/Leadership Development funding available for minority-led organizations in Northern California

January 22, 2010

In partnership with The California Endowment, Sierra Health Foundation will award a total of $75,000 to support organizational capacity building and leadership development activities for minority-led organizations serving in Sierra Health's 26-county funding region.

Nonprofit organizations are essential to the flourishing of communities, and a vibrant and diverse civil society requires both effective community-based organizations and strong, diverse leadership throughout the nonprofit sector. The goal of this funding opportunity is to strengthen the capacity of Northern California's minority-led organizations serving communities of color, and to support the development of leaders of color.

This capacity building/leadership development funding opportunity is open to minority-led nonprofit organizations that have an explicit mission to serve racial and ethnic minority populations, and in which key executive staff with policy- and decision-making authority, and at least half of its board of directors, represent racial and ethnic minority populations.

This is a competitive funding opportunity for one-time awards of up to $10,000. Examples of activities that will be considered for funding include strategic planning, board development, leadership development and organizational assessments.

We held an in-person proposers' conference and discussion on Feb. 3 at Sierra Health Foundation, as well as a teleconference on Feb. 5. Participation in one of the conferences was encouraged, but not required, to apply for funding. Proposals were due by noon on Feb. 18.
